To have a child is a beautiful moment in the life of every woman. But what if you find out you’ll be a mother of more than one baby? What if there are twins, triplets or multiples? Are you interested in why they are born? We are! We searched why some mothers have multiples and some don’t. Here are our findings summarized in five interesting questions and answers.

How many multiples are there in the world?

As you probably know, in the animal world, the birth of more than one offspring is completely normal. In our world, it is not so common but in the last years the situation has slowly been changing, as you can see, moreover, here.

For a better idea, in the last 40 years of the 20th century, there has been one birth of multiples per every hundred births (the most often being twins). At the beginning of the 21st century, one in every 65 mother has had a multiple child birth. Today one out five mothers has a multiple. The mothers of multiples are usually older than 35 years old.

Why are multiples born?

As you probably read in other articles somewhere else, every zygote (single fertilized egg) may produce a single embryo or two or more embryos. When the zygote is divided to more embryos, every embryo has the same genetic material inside.

Why the increased number of multiples?

Simply, thanks to assisted reproduction, hormonal based treatment for infertility or other methods supports the control of the reproduction. Part of the hormonal based treatment is also the stimulation of woman’s ovaries. Thanks to the stimulation they can release more eggs which can be inseminated. Also, the doctors insert more embryos to the woman’s uterus.

Why are some twins monozygotic and others are not?

More than two third of twins are dizygotic, it means that two eggs are inseminated by two sperms. These babies grow each in their own placenta and they can be completely different (including their gender).

If the babies are identical twins (monozygotic twins), it means they spend the first few days of their lives in the same egg which was inseminated by one sperm. Later, the egg is divided and the babies grow in their own placentas or afterbirths. Monozygotic twins are always the same gender. They also have the same faces, same eyes, hair etc.
